A barge hits Kentucky and Indiana Railroad bridge over a week ago. Liquid asphalt leaks in Ohio River in Louisville KY.

It will take up to five weeks to remove an 80-foot barge pinned against the pilings of the old Kentucky & Indiana Railroad bridge on the Ohio River, officials said yesterday.

Salvagers, delayed by fog, are still on their way. They plan to reheat up to 800,000 gallons of asphalt to a liquid state before pumping it out and righting the barge.

Its snowing today..........

"We regret this accident happened," said Roger Harris, vice president of operations for Magnolia Marine Transport, the Mississippi-based company that owns the barge.

Regret isn't good enough as its polluting our water source. Three eyed fish sandwiches anyone? 12 toed children.....

Although the barge appeared more stable yesterday than it had a day earlier, authorities worry it could break apart and hit the Sherman Minton Bridge downriver. Police remained ready to close the Interstate 64 bridge to traffic within five minutes.

Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher viewed the 80-foot-long barge from the riverbank yesterday and said a Coast Guard investigation would help determine exactly what caused the accident.

He said the state might seek reimbursement from Magnolia Marine for expenses.
(typical)

In 2004, Magnolia Marine settled a lawsuit with Oklahoma for $4.5 million in property damages after one of its barges hit a bridge support four years ago on the Arkansas River, collapsing part of the bridge and killing 14 people.

Yet another reason to ship by railroad...........

What a mess... it seems these barge accidents are happening a bit too often, anymore. The old K & I isn't still being used is it ? It was THE bridge when I was growing up in New Albany, then years later they build the one at Jeffersonville.

I can remember riding the trolley's across the old K&I, to go to L'ville. Ahh, memories !!! Thanks for sharing the article.
